Captain Phillip "Curly" McGinn was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin and served in the US Navy from 1966 until July 1970. After attending a wedding in Key West in 1974, he re-located there in 1976.
Starting as a mate on charter boats in 1977, he went on to get his Captains license in 1980 which he holds today in current standing.
Captain McGinn at one time owned a small local bar in old town Key West for 10 years, dissolving the business to concentrate and successfully operate his own Charter Boat companies from 1992 until 2010.
Having won numerous fishing tournaments over the years for his clients, including Sailfish, Marlin, Swordfish and Shark tournaments, McGinn's years of working in local waters and weather conditions has given him a local advantage.
Along with a perfect record of complete safety for all of his clients, McGinn has been instrumental in his efforts of conservation and preservation of fish species by urging Commodore Eschrich, of Club Nautico Marina Hemingway in Cuba, to implement the catch and release program for on-going fishing tournaments.
Captain McGinn was the President of the Key West Charter Boat Association for two years, as well as three years as Official Captain of The Sloppy Joe's Fishing Team in Cuba, and is the current Senior Vice Commander for the local Key West Chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW 3911) Post from 2014 to the present time.
Captain McGinn currently resides in Key West on an antique wooden Chris Craft Constellation boat built in 1967.
Born in Fort Pierce, Florida, Captain Steve Liberatore was first introduced to charter fishing at the age of 11 and immediately fell in love with the sport. He admired the charter captains he fished with and dreamed of the day when he could be a captain. In 1995, Captain Steve acquired his Coast Guard 100-ton Captain’s license and began building his first charter boat, “The Big Easy,” out of Port Canaveral, Florida.
In 1998, after determining that Key West was the only place in the United States to be a full-time, everyday charter captain/mate, Captain Steve sold “The Big Easy” (still operating out of Sebastian, Fla.) and moved to the Southernmost City.
Steve has worked on some of the top charter boats running out of Key West such as The Miss Gina, The Extreme, The Generation, and since June of 2001, the Mr. Z. Captain Steve has fished and placed in many tournaments over the years including:
Capt. Steve has been sponsored by Bacardi for the Key West Marlin Tournament from 2003 thru 2015.
Even after professionally fishing in Puerto Rico, Mexico, The Bahamas, and Cuba, Steve still believes Key West has more to offer. Captain, mate, engineer, but most of all a fisherman, you will usually find Steve working the deck because as he likes to say, “That’s where the action is!”
